Nestled in the quiet, leafy streets of Prahran, ‘Veil House’ introduced a bold new identity into the traditional heritage context. Carefully balancing ‘old & new’, the design of the home works to carefully preserve the existing street frontage and charming neighbourhood character, using its central ornate hallway to create a seamless transition through to the dynamic rear addition.
Formed through a close collaboration with the clients’ spatial requirements and the site’s unique constraints, the sculptural, contemporary addition utilises bold, fractured forms in heavy contrast with the fine detailing of the heritage façade creating a home that meets the standards of modern living and a space that is both expressive & personal.
A key focus on the design was to enhance the home’s relationship with the outdoors, with its expansive glazing creating a scenario where the threshold between the indoors and the natural environment is blurred. Through this design element, the garden is able to become a seamless extension of the living spaces, reinforcing a lifestyle which is open & connected to the ever-changing seasons and fostering a sense of a retreat in the heart of inner Melbourne.
