Yarraville Residence

The design of this renovation opens up the existing residence, creating a modern light-filled living zone. The new living space is located to the rear of the property, and opens onto an external undercover deck, blurring the distinction between the inside and outside spaces.

  1. Yarraville Residence

The design of this renovation opens up the existing residence, creating a modern light-filled living zone. The new living space is located to the rear of the property, and opens onto an external undercover deck, blurring the distinction between the inside and outside spaces.

  2. Solar Access

A requirement of this design was to locate living areas at the rear of the property, maximising the northern sunlight, whilst also minimising any direct views to the carport to the rear of the property. To achieve this, the building was designed with a clearstory roof structure, and high level windows to the rear, which blocks views to the carport.

  3. Journey

The transition between the old and new is compressed with indented full height windows which look out onto a semi-enclosed garden area. This transition area is further contrasted with the change in the roof form, and angled ceilings.

  4. Delineation

The external walls on each side of the extension were finished with contrasting materials to accentuate a shift within the plan. On one side the wall is a continuous brick veneer, and on the alternate side, the stone wall wraps in a vertical manner around the visual openings.

  5. Open Plan

The lower ceiling over the dining room creates a subtle spatial contrast to enclose the room giving diners a sense of intimacy. Full height windows reinforce links with the outside and the natural landscape.

  6. Kitchen

The kitchen forms a feature within the main living room incorporating high quality materials with contemporary minimal lines.

  7. Transition

The interiors are finished with clean contemporary lines to compliment the architecture of the building. A transition space contrasts the front part of the heritage building with the contemporary addition at the rear, and sets up a device to articulate of the components of the building interior.

  9. Streetscape

With this project, the front few rooms of the house were restored to keep the heritage allure alive in the house. To delineate the change in style between the old and new the building was compressed with indented full height windows and a semi-enclosed garden area was incorporated. This transition area is further contrasted with the change in the roof form and angled ceilings.
