Richmond Residence

Looking at the regular grain of the local sub-division pattern, this house sets out to develop an architectural strategy which squeezes and stretches the rectangular divisions of the local neighbourhood’s 19th century working class urban model.

The plan was pushed and pulled to accommodate the components of the brief. The walls at the front of the house follow a traditional regular pattern, whereas at the rear the walls skew, volumes carve out, and edges blur. Light wells aligned on each side of the building form an axis which sets up the device for transitioning between the two.

  1. Richmond Residence

This two story renovation creates a four bedroom family home on a small, challenging, inner city site. It retains the heritage appeal of the residence while incorporating the modern features of practical living. The building design responds to the inner city context, and features a number of architectural design elements.

  2. Open Plan

Subtle differences between the dining and living area creates a spatial contrast, in what is essentially an open plan living area. A semi-open joinery unit divides the dining and living area whilst providing a valuable storage and display space. The two parts are further distinguished with the dining area being raised on a timber plinth, and using contrasting ceiling materials.

  3. PASSIVE SOLAR DESIGN

Passive solar design principles were incorporated to achieve a high standard building thermal performance including high levels of insulation and double glazed windows. The thermal mass of the exposed aggregate polished concrete slab stores and releases thermal energy.

  4. Ensuite

The main feature of the master ensuite is the ‘toilet pod’ which takes its intention from being pushed back beyond the transition axis setup within the house. The pod is an indented space with curved edges, and is finished with bright coloured glass mosaics.

  5. Materials

The white walls of the ensuite are contrasted with the custom designed timber veneer vanity unit, mirror shaving cabinet, and marble splashback.

  6. Kitchen

The kitchen forms a feature within the main living room incorporating high quality materials with contemporary minimal lines. The reflective, 2pac black joinery at the rear of the kitchen, anchors the room, whilst concealing the double oven, and elegantly framing the stainless steel double-door fridge.

  7. Interiors

The interiors allow for a flexible use of the various spaces within the inner city dwelling. Large bi-fold panel doors open the rear of the house to the back yard, and allow the interiors to extend to the outside.

  8. Spatial Contrasts

The elevated spotted gum flooring in the dining room, gives the room a slight hierarchy even though on first look one may consider the living and dining rooms to be one open plan. The spaces are further articulated with timber veneer panels with low gloss clear varnish which enclose the room giving diners a sense of intimacy.

  9. External Materials

The external wall cladding of the master bedroom notionally buckles to reveal a large window. Solar control is provided with large feature operable louver shutters which provide both screening from the westerly sun, and a device to comply with overlooking requirements.

  10. Landing

The skewed wall of the master bedroom allows a double height space to bathe the ground floor living area with natural light. The first floor landing opens onto an upper level private balcony which provides views over the neighbouring rooftops.

  11. Streetscape

This two story renovation creates a four bedroom family home on a small, challenging, inner city site. It retains the heritage appeal of the residence while incorporating the modern features of practical living.

  12. Bathroom

The main bathroom incorporates a glass splash back, and a custom designed vanity unit, and a feature marble splashback. This room plays with variations on reflective, textured, and coloured finishes.
