  1. Richmond Residence

This two story renovation creates a four bedroom family home on a small, challenging, inner city site. It retains the heritage appeal of the residence while incorporating the modern features of practical living. The building design responds to the inner city context, and features a number of architectural design elements.

  2. Solar Access

Solar access, particularly for the ground floor living areas, was a key requirement for this inner city residence. A design solution was developed with a double height space, which allows sunlight to filter into the building via a secluded upper level deck.

  3. Amenity

Light wells provide natural sunlight and ventilation, for the centrally located kitchen and bathroom.

  4. Old and New

A contrast between the retained elements of the existing building and the new additions was expressed through the design response. A transition zone between the old and new was implied through the aligned light wells (on both sides of the building) and further expressed through the form of the upper level.

  5. Open Plan

Subtle differences between the dining and living areas create a spatial contrast, in essentially an open plan living area. A semi-open joinery unit divides the dining and living areas providing a valuable storage space. These areas are distinguished further with the dining area raised on a timber plinth, and the use of contrasting ceiling materials.

  6. Journey

Devices were employed to make the building seem larger than it really is (site area = 9m x 21m). To extend the journey from the front entrance, through the living areas, and to the sleeping areas ont he upper level, the stair was purposely located at the rear of the building.

  7. Overlooking

Large adjustable external louvers screen direct views into the neighbouring back yards, from the upper level master bedroom window. These louvers allow the building to be shielded from the hot westerly sun, and also comply with local planning scheme overlooking principles.
