Richmond Residence 2

The aim of this project was to produce a compact three bedroom family home, plus a study, on a small inner-city title. The brief was achieved by retaining the front portion of the existing Victorian weatherboard dwelling, with the addition of symmetrical, double story structure to the rear.

    The aim of this project was to produce a compact three bedroom family home, plus a study, on a small inner-city title. The brief was achieved by retaining the front portion of the existing Victorian weatherboard dwelling, with the addition of symmetrical, double story structure to the rear.

  2. Delineation

    The external wall facing the laneway was finished with contrasting materials to lower the apparent height of the building. Bands of coloured bricks on the lower portion of the wall accentuate the wrapping of this wall around the end of the building.

  3. Old and New

    The transition zone between the old and new sections of the building was expressed within the design. The use of a low bulkhead over the kitchen zone compresses the transition space, which is further articulated externally with high level windows facing the laneway.

  4. Contrast

    The additions were setback from the front of the existing building.
