Hawthorn Residence

The alterations and additions to this house expand the existing living spaces to create a contemporary family home. The bold form creates a double- level modern expression, which connects the living space with the back yard.

Outdoor Living

The covered rear balcony allows the living space to extend to the outside. This provides a link between the house and the backyard and swimming pool.

Interiors

The interiors allow for a flexible use of the various spaces within the dwelling. Large sliding panel doors open the rear of the house to the back yard, and allow the interiors to extend to the outside.

Stair

The stair, which connects an upper level balcony with a backyard, creates an architectural feature through the use of an asymmetrical form at the rear of the building. A large window within the living spaces provides a visual connection with the stair, and reinforces this functional connection.

Materials

The new addition is articulated with lightweight wall cladding with subtle vertical grooves. The dark stained timber widow frames compliment the red brick existing walls. The timber decking links the rear balcony with the swimming pool.

Details

The new addition cloaked the rear of the existing building to create a double- level modern expression when viewer from the rear.

Stairwell

The stair, which connects an upper level balcony with a backyard, creates an architectural feature through the use of an asymmetrical form at the rear of the building. A screening device was created by alternating the sizes of the timber balustrade to help minimise overlooking from the stair.
