Hawthorn Residence

This project extends the existing living space of a large family home. The bold form creates a double-level modern expression for the residence, which connects the living space to the back yard.

Openness

To maximise the connection with the outside, large sliding doors spanning the full width of the building were employed. These doors connect the living spaces to the outside timber deck. The flat external awning further extends the apparent opennes between the inside and outside with flush ceiling lining.

Stair

The stair, which connects an upper level balcony with a backyard, creates an architectural feature through the use of an asymmetrical form at the rear of the building. A large window within the living spaces provides a visual connection with the stair, and reinforces this functional connection.

Plan

The expanded living area provides an open space for the living, dining and kitchen areas.
